lasers shot from the sky

The winding road curved tightly up a hill, the trees letting through only sporadic dashes of light, like lasers shot from the sky. They turned down a lane, tire tracks the only proof of civilisation. Grass grew high all around, wild flowers higher still. The lane opened up to a small, sun-drenched lot enclosed by an infantry of trees guarding a little wooden cabin with a gable roof. Damien parked the car on a pebbled strip in the freshly mowed front yard.”

Magical Realism Romance The Nirvana Threads

like a ghost

“An out-of-focus, dark-haired woman dressed in white appeared beside her; a doctor. She fiddled with Carlie’s body. Muffled, incomprehensible sounds came from her mouth. Leaning in closer, she stroked Carlie’s hair. The brown of her eyes was the only clearly defined feature on her blurry face. It might have passed unnoticed, but how could it, when the doctor cracked Johnny’s smile, just before fading into the murkiness like a ghost.”

the space between them

“The space between them was narrow. The smile that lived beside her just moments before had faded. His curled fingers gouged into his thighs, crumpling the fabric of his jeans. She would have reached for them. She should have. It would have been easy to hold his hand one last time. But her body was stiff, paralysed, her eyes transfixed. The moonlit trees on the horizon, the tall grasses and sign posts beyond the window behind him, all slowed to a near stop, as did her breath and the beating of her heart. Its thudding, held in time like a dripping faucet, echoed loudly in her head. She drove her chin through the mud-thick air to face the front—ahead, where there was now nothing but light.”

swank red laces

The rope from my treehouse dangled heavily to the ground below, as did my morale. Sliding down with my routine languor, my shoe slipped from my foot and fell, the laces entangling around a small branch. I dawdlingly dangled sideways and reached down to unhook it, calmly flipping and pulling at the swank red laces I’d purchased with a moonloop’s worth of work.

The clothes we wore needed to blend in perfectly with our function, like a uniform, varying in the amounts of blues, grays and lavenders depending on the trade one held. Life was unbearably drab, and I thirsted for any sort of relief from it all. To be daubed with any other color was bold, intrepid, and audacious, especially considering the lengths one had to go through to acquire it.”

the same messy life

Morning came. Tears had encrusted Carlie’s hair to her face. Her swollen eyelids, opening with difficulty, exposed the same messy life she had fallen asleep to. Her feet struggled out of the blanket wrapped around her limbs, off the couch and onto the cold floor. With an in-breath, she pushed herself up from the sinking cushions, the springs creaking as she rose, and dragged her bare soles with dry, swishy noises all the way to the bathroom.

“Ugh,” she said, seeing herself in the mirror. “You look like shit, Carlie Jones.”

hello to you, too

It was a sunny morning. The cool air swooshing through the windows filled the house with the smell of blossoms and fresh- cut grass. There wasn’t anywhere she needed to be, so Carlie puttered around until she flopped into the living-room armchair with the raggedy Kerouac novel Leo had lent her. She hadn’t even flipped the first page when a knock came at the door.

Carlie grunted out of her sprawl and went to open it. It was Lucas.

“Crap,” she said.

“Hello to you, too.” He smiled, attempting to let himself in.

woodsy orchestra

“We followed the creature out of the clearing and down another dimly lit, green-roofed passage. My eyes adjusted quickly. The corridor was speckled with more animals, sounds and fragrant flowers than I could count. Little creatures poked their heads out and shied back into the verdant walls on either side of us, reminiscent of the spirtles in Mallo’s beard. Fast, tiny byrds hopped across the forest floor ahead. Serpents crept like vines across and above, hissing in harmony with the rest of the woodsy orchestra. Rodents skittered beside us, zigzagging in and out of our steps, making the happy pack of children burst into giggles that resonated loudly inside the living basket surrounding us. We enjoyed most of the day this way, merrily walking without tiring, even though there was a purposefulness to our step that reminded me of the unknown yet weighty mission that lay ahead.”

caught entity

For a short moment as I was passed from one to the other, I felt like an entity caught in the pull between what had to be the two most magnetic beings in the world.”

book quote, Topaz

the color market

“I slid rapidly down the dark burrow to the threshold of the sub-plains where the color market lay, and landing with my feet firmly on the hard ground, brushed myself off as I stood to look around the poorly lit surroundings. The color market was like a tiny village, spread wide to house workshops, vending stations, and Tintors’ homes tucked away like small caves along the hollowed veins of its circuitry. The only light came from candles and the bioluminescent chubbiness of flightless flaptoot byrds perched on the leafless branches of small, dead trees scattered about.”

Just a Kiss

This wasn’t love. This was icing on a cake she didn’t know the flavour to yet. She wanted this moment, this tinge of delight. Easy and careless and pain-free.

“Just a kiss,” she murmured.
