woodsy orchestra

“We followed the creature out of the clearing and down another dimly lit, green-roofed passage. My eyes adjusted quickly. The corridor was speckled with more animals, sounds and fragrant flowers than I could count. Little creatures poked their heads out and shied back into the verdant walls on either side of us, reminiscent of the spirtles in Mallo’s beard. Fast, tiny byrds hopped across the forest floor ahead. Serpents crept like vines across and above, hissing in harmony with the rest of the woodsy orchestra. Rodents skittered beside us, zigzagging in and out of our steps, making the happy pack of children burst into giggles that resonated loudly inside the living basket surrounding us. We enjoyed most of the day this way, merrily walking without tiring, even though there was a purposefulness to our step that reminded me of the unknown yet weighty mission that lay ahead.”

caught entity

For a short moment as I was passed from one to the other, I felt like an entity caught in the pull between what had to be the two most magnetic beings in the world.”

book quote, Topaz

the color market

“I slid rapidly down the dark burrow to the threshold of the sub-plains where the color market lay, and landing with my feet firmly on the hard ground, brushed myself off as I stood to look around the poorly lit surroundings. The color market was like a tiny village, spread wide to house workshops, vending stations, and Tintors’ homes tucked away like small caves along the hollowed veins of its circuitry. The only light came from candles and the bioluminescent chubbiness of flightless flaptoot byrds perched on the leafless branches of small, dead trees scattered about.”

April 1994

“What she was to do with such a gift, she didn’t know. It was April 1994, and she couldn’t think further than the next gym day. She couldn’t think past Johnny’s kiss.”

are you going to keep that?

The branches, though creaking, seemed soft like vines, its foliage musical gemlike ornaments. Just as they were all but done lifting themselves off the ground, a thin bough-tip scooped up the wooden stump I had loathsomely discarded and, wrapping itself around it, pulled it up amidst the other elderly limbs as they returned into their erect position.

“Um, you are going to keep that?”

irregular-shaped shadows

“My tent was imbued with the soothing blue light coming from the few candles lit in the corners, casting the irregular-shaped shadows our bodies made on the draped walls. I sat on the ground in front of him and felt the silence weigh heavier and heavier as he avoided my eyes, staring only at my feet.

“I believe I am almost done here,” he exhaled.

the smell of campfire

“The tank top pulled off in one sweep she lunged onto the unkempt bed in search for her bra. Threading it on with speed, she jumped into some faded jeans, rummaged through a drawer, and yanked out a crumpled t-shirt. She held it up; it was her black Iron Maiden one. She looked at it hard, and then smelled it. As if it could possibly still smell of campfire. The memories stormed in.”

Girls – Those nights by the campfire, when you ask your girlfriend to go pee with you in the woods, do you really think a bear is going to find you or do you really just want company? The dark woods can be scary bears or no bears lol. Apparently guys do not ask the same from each other ha ha 🙃🚺🔥🐻

no place for an angel

“I used to stare at the stars until I fell asleep, thinking she might be up there, watching. Then Pa explained that the skies are full of suns, planets, and flying rocks. That it was beautiful but no place for an angel. He said her soul was somewhere we couldn’t see with our eyes, or feel with our hands, but that she was close, close enough to hear my prayers and give me goodnight kisses.”

I’ve been spending my days on the accompanying graphic novel and it’s so loooong. I’m in a constant roller coaster between being excited and discouraged. “Keep on swimming!” As would say Dory… 🐠

garbage is safer

Skunks were strange creatures. They had way more sway than they thought. They didn’t need to eat garbage; they could probably walk into a grocery store and leave with whatever they wanted without anyone stopping them. A skunk was a loaded gun. But in its unawareness, garbage was safer, and therefore good enough. Carlie was not the type of girl to think that garbage was good enough, and she found herself resenting, if only for a fleeting moment, the skunk for not having the balls to waltz into that corner store and rob it.
