About

Hello! My name is pronounced Rachelle, I’m a Canadian artist, musician and writer. My pronouns are she/her. I love weird and magical things.

Art! I studied for a stint in fine arts at the Cegep de Matane (Quebec) where I grew up by the sea, Okanagan University College in Kelowna (British Columbia) where the Rockies are always in the backdrop, and in beautiful Montreal under the wing of the Argentinian painters Alejandro Boim and the late Mariana Semino for close to a decade. They were my real Art School. I’ve given drawing and painting classes in the past and will probably take that up again someday. Some of my favourite painters are Denis Sarazhin, David Cheifetz, Jeremy Mann, Guillermo Lorca García H, and Jules Bastien Lepage (1848-1884).

Music! I grew up in a household full of melodies and instruments. My parents practiced with their band in the basement and I mimicked their tunes on my little organ. I started playing guitar around the age of seven and was playing Iron Maiden at nine. It was the eighties! As a young adult, I wrote and recorded two albums (the 2nd one co-written with my husband). Though my main instrument is the guitar, I attempt to play on anything I lay my hands on. I fronted our little ensemble August Elliot, we played and gigged and it was fun. Our projects have been on hold for a while but are slowly coming back to life. Some of my favourite bands are Pearl Jam & Alice in Chains (Seattle sound – my teenage love), most of 90s California skater punk rock (Good Riddance, Lagwagon, No Use For A Name, Strung Out), Bon Iver, Phantogram, Novo Amor, Led Zep, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica pre Black Album, the Beatles, Beck, a Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Beastie Boys, Death Cab For Cutie, Faith No More, Elliott Smith… My tastes are eclectic.

Poetry! I’ve been writing poetry and song lyrics since I was about 14 yrs old. My mom said “write out your feelings”, so I did. That eventually came to include song lyrics and notebooks and notebooks of hip hop rhymes.

Books! To date, I have published four novels. I’m a “pantser”, I love discovering what a story will become when I start writing it. It’s a wickedly fun adventure. In a story, I try to offer good time. But better yet, transcendence. Because that’s what I look for when I’m reading. Take me somewhere else and give me all the emotions! I like writing strange and twisted stories, beautiful stories, playful stories. I like to think a person can see deeper meaning in them if they read for it, and be content with pure entertainment if they don’t. Some of my favourite books are The Name of The Wind (Patrick Rothfuss), Ninth House (Leigh Bardugo), The Beach (Alex Garland), The Seas (Samantha Hunt), The Starless Sea (Erin Morgenstern), The Wicker King (K.Ancrum), Sawkill Girls (Claire Legrand), The Scorpio Races (Maggie Stiefvater), The Road (Cormac McCarthy), The Lies of Locke Lamora (Scott Lynch), The Handmaid’s Tale (Margaret Atwood), The Time Traveler’s Wife (Audrey Niffenegger), The Witches of New York (Ami McKay), Neverwhere (Neil Gaiman), The Martian (Andy Weir), The Boatman’s Daughter (Andy Davidson), A History of What Comes Next (Sylvain Neuvel), Something Wicked This Way Comes (Ray Bradbury), and The Hobbit (Tolkien) – one of my first loves.

I live in my birth city of Montreal with my husband and two kids, whom I homeschooled. They are now in their late teens and they are my favourite people on this earth. They are kind, open-minded dancers, artists, and musicians. We have a lot of fun.
